Porali – Film Review

This is the 5th directorial venture of filmmaker Samuthirakani. It is definitely a laudable effort packed with convincing and dedicated performances given by its main star cast. This film showcases Samuthirakani’s repertoire as a storyteller par excellence. He succeeds in capturing the undivided attention of the audience, and maintaining it for the whole length of the film under his control. The film opens in a not so usual manner, and a sense of foreboding / uneasiness is injected in to the viewer right from the beginning itself. The director also offers a brief insight in to what this film is all about, thru his voice narration. It begins with the two main protagonists Ilankumaran (played by M.Sasikumar) and nallavan (played by Allari Naresh) escaping from an undisclosed location and reaching Chennai to seek a new living. They find their old friend pullikutty (played by Kanja karuppu, with his usual wits and naive antics) and convince him in a rather compelling manner to accommodate them. Ilankumaran's kind and gentle nature, soon wins the affection of many people that cometh his way and both the friends soon end up in a Gas station as salaried workers. The particular character of an abandoned roadside dweller, whom Ilankumaran tends to, is of praiseworthy mention and is inevitably intertwined with the main crux of the plot. To utilize their free time in a useful and productive manner Ilankumaran comes up with an innovative and shrewd yet benevolent idea in which they eventually find heartening success. Both Ilankumaran and Nallavan find their love interests, the girl pursuing the man in the former s case and the inverse in the latter's case. It is at this successful and crucial stage that their mysterious and ruthless past reenters in to their lives and begins to chase them once again. Kumaran's mysterious and poignant past is unfolded to the audience in a remarkable and dramatic fashion. It is after the intermission that the film begins to reveal its true purpose and raison d'etre. A compelling yet previously untold poignant social message forms the backdrop of the film. The director's diligence and commitment to the social cause shows off in this sincere and well made effort. There are quite a good number of laughs too in this film, to keep the viewers entertained as well as engrossed.
